Desktop and Laptop

When generating a wallet via Levain on a desktop or a laptop, take note of the following best practices to secure your device:

  1. When setting up, use either a new device or if using an existing device, reinstall the operating system (OS). If you are reinstalling the OS, use a secure cryptographic checksum to verify the integrity of the installation image.

  2. Perform regular software updates and do not use an outdated OS. Outdated systems are not optimized to resolve known security vulnerabilities.

  3. Install security software on your device.

    1. Schedule routine anti-virus scans and consultations with IT professionals.

    2. Ensure that your device is fully inspected for trojans, keyloggers, and malicious applications or browser plugins.

  4. It is highly recommended to use your device exclusively for Levain related activities (such as initiating transactions, updating the account, etc.).

Keycard Storage

When generating a wallet via Levain, you will be prompted to download a keycard from your browser. Take note of the following best practices to store your keycard securely:

  1. Download your keycard directly to a USB device:

    1. As an added layer of security, it is recommended that you use an encrypted USB flash drive for this purpose.

    2. Once you have downloaded your keycard, immediately disconnect your flash drive from your device.

  2. Connect your USB device to a printer and print the keycard:

    1. Follow your printer manufacturer’s instructions to perform this step.

    2. Clear your printer memory once your keycard is printed.

  3. For durability, laminate your printed keycard: To further protect your keycard from water damage, store it in a sealed plastic bag.

  4. Use a mobile device that is not connected to the Internet to scan your keycard’s QR codes: Ensure that the mobile device is equipped with QR scanning functionality. The contents should match the QR code data printed on your keycard.

  5. Store your keycard in a secure, robust safe: Your safe should ideally be reinforced with fire and theft protection capabilities.

  6. Save a backup copy of your keycard in an encrypted USB device: This USB device should only be deployed as a backup as USB devices are subject to loss and even operational failure.

To further mitigate your keycard’s susceptibility to security compromises, avoid the following practices:

  1. Recording your keycard’s details in online platforms (such as Google Drive, email inboxes, or any cloud storage service).

  2. Taking photos or make digital copies of your keycard.

  3. Informing unauthorized personnel about your keycard’s location and how it is secured.

  4. Sharing sensitive information such as your passphrase, keycard, and login credentials with unauthorized personnel.

  5. Disseminating your credentials to external wallet-hosting services.

Wallet Password

When creating a password to secure your wallet, take note of the following best practices:

  • Ensure that your password is unique to your wallet.

  • It is highly recommended for you to use an encrypted password manager to generate and store your wallet password.

  • Do not use the same password for other accounts and services.

  • Ensure that you use a different unique password for all wallets.

To authorize more users within your enterprise account to sign transactions, you will need to share the password with them. Follow these best practices to maintain your wallet’s security:

  • Share the password offline. Upon sharing the password, erase all evidence of the sharing.

  • Employ a password manager that enables secure password sharing.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Why should I save my keycard?

This is because your keycard is essential for disaster recovery, giving you an avenue to recover your assets should Levain’s service become unavailable or if you forget your password. Your keycard is generated as an encrypted pdf file during wallet creation and can only be downloaded once. Failure to save or print your keycard is irreversible, as Levain is unauthorized to reissue your keycard.

2. What is the safest method to store my keycard?

Print your keycard and store it in a safe. Upon printing your keycard, erase your printer’s memory.

3. What happens if I lose my keycard?

Your keycard will be rendered irretrievable, as Levain is unauthorized to reissue or recover it. If you remember your wallet’s password, you are advised to create a new wallet and transfer your funds from your old wallet. During the wallet creation process, ensure that you make sufficient copies of the generated keycard.

4. Should I use the same password across all multiple wallets?

No. We strongly urge customers to create a unique password for each individual wallet.
